NEW YORK, NY –– April 25, 2018 –– “On behalf of the WNBPA, we want to thank Secretary Rice and the Commission for their work.
We understand the Commission’s focus was to assess the state of the sport as it relates to men’s collegiate programs and to recommend transformational change. While we are still reviewing the report and talking to our membership, there is opportunity here. The Commission has laid the foundation to that change.
We find it significant that the Commission explicitly recommended that all of basketball —USA Basketball, the NBA, the NBPA, the WNBA and the WNBPA, join with the NCAA to consider “creating analogous programs and initiatives for the development of young women basketball players for the collegiate and professional levels.” The inclusion of girls and women in this conversation is important.
